Description

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria)

Found in Scotland mainly in the south west, on damp but sunny sites, this perennial has stunning magenta flowers on spikes up to 100cm tall in July & August. A favourite of bees and butterflies it has had many traditional medicinal uses.

Sowing: Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Sow in trays or pots of moist compost and transplant to an open site that does not get too dry in summer or scatter the seed directly onto the fine raked seed bed and firm down well. Water well and keep the young plants weeded. 50-150 seeds per packet.
