It’s that time of year again…on Monday (13th) when we were down at Willow Pond (one of the ponds we made at Mavisbank), we saw a frog couple and the next day there was lots of frogspawn. Frogs lay eggs in the pond a little earlier than toads; often, as is the case with this frogspawn there can be a little ice on it.
The big piles of frogspawn are very attractive to palmate newts and no doubt, as in previous years, they will soon be snacking on the nutritious spawn. Toad spawn, strung in long lines around the plants in the pond will be harder for us to see as the pond has changed from a fairly bare new bit of water to the quite densely vegetated place it is now.
The pic of the adult frog is from our hawkbit crop in August; there were lots of frogs in this crop around the same time – not sure why…
