Description
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
A very tall biennial of sunny banks and well-drained woodland clearings throughout much of Scotland. The very tall, yellow flower spikes grow from rosettes of thick leaves which are covered in dense hairs giving them a soft, felty, grey-green appearance. Once the flowers are finished they leave strong, tall seed heads on the dried out flower spikes. Grows up to 200 cm tall.
Sowing: Can be sown at any time of year, but best in early autumn or in spring. Sow in trays or pots of moist compost and transplant when still small to an open or very lightly shaded, well-drained site, or sow directly onto a fine-raked seedbed firming down well. Keep young plants watered & weeded.
